Lower Brandywine’s junior choir is comprised of children and youth from early elementary through middle school ages. Singing in church worship usually averages one Sunday a month. Most years, a cantata/drama is presented. About half of our choristers are from Greenhill Presbyterian Church. Our opportunities to sing in their sanctuary are limited, but we will share an end of the year medley of anthems.
The emphasis of our choral program is on the spiritual and musical growth of children with the bonus being the joy of singing and making music together. A variety of anthem styles and accompanying instruments helps inspire the young singers. Being in the choir also provides a wonderful introduction to service in the church and funnels participants into the church senior choir or regional choirs. The cantata/dramas are great fun for the kids and build self-confidence with their opportunities for singing solos, speaking in front of an audience, and being a character. Music has been a rich and longstanding tradition of Lower Brandywine, and we work on keeping it alive amidst other activities that encroach upon a child’s time. Singing is a skill that enjoyed at an early age cultivates a love that can be appreciated throughout a lifetime. So important!
To work on an anthem together and shape it into a performance quality piece – memorizing and taking to heart the words – engenders love and fellowship amongst these choristers. Rehearsals are light-hearted but flow with mutual respect for learning the music and concern for each other. One particularly pretty anthem ‘I Cannot Keep from Singing’ has become our signature piece. It came as an outgrowth of a rehearsal activity to ”just say the words” only to have the kids break into singing. Utterly joyful!
